1 Chapter 12, Section 4 Using Sound

2 Acoustics Acoustics is the study of sound. reverberation is when sound reflects many times and produces multiple echoes. too much reverberation can ruin a music concert. scientists and engineers prevent this by specially designing concert halls

3 Concert halls should have:
“Good” Acoustics Concert halls should have: rounded walls soft materials (draperies, carpeting) furniture and other structures All of these items will reduce reverberation.

6 Echolocation Echolocation is the process of locating objects by making sounds and interpreting the sound waves that are reflected back. Bats and dolphins use this to move around in the dark and to locate prey.

7

8 SONAR SONAR is a human-made system that uses the reflection of underwater sound waves to detect objects SONAR stands for SOund Navigation And Ranging the ultrasonic sound wave travels through water and is reflected when it hits something solid.

10 mapping the ocean floor
Uses of SONAR military finding shipwrecks fishing mapping the ocean floor

11 Ultrasound in Medicine
cleaning glassware & instruments—sound breaks up dirt ultrasound machines can detect & monitor conditions such as pregnancy, heart disease & cancer the ultrasonic wave travels through the body & is reflected by soft tissues

12 Ultrasound Machine

13 Ultrasound in Medicine
the reflected waves produce electrical signals a computer program converts the electrical signals into a video image called a sonogram

14 Treating with Ultrasound
kidney stones (hard deposits of calcium compounds in the kidneys) can be broken up into small pieces using short bursts of ultrasonic waves the fragments pass out of the body in the urine patient does not have to have surgery as a result
