1 A Lesson on Slope

2 Imagine yourself...

3 What is the meaning of this sign?
A) icy road ahead B) steep road ahead C) curvy road ahead D) trucks entering highway ahead Hear the answer.

4 Objectives The student will be able to:
1) define slope as “rise over run.” 2) explain how to determine the slope of a staircase or a handicap ramp. Hear the objectives.

5 Slope is the steepness of a line.
It can also be defined as rise over run (vertical change over horizontal change). Example Given the ordered pairs (-2, -2) and (4, 1), find the slope of the line that passes through these points.

6 Determine the slope of the line.
Graph the points (-2, -2) and (4, 1) and apply “rise over run”. 6 3 rise/run = 3/6 = 1/2 Hear an explanation.

7 How would you determine the slope of the staircase?
Hear an explanation.

8 Time for your job interview!
Legally, handicap ramps cannot rise more than 1 inch for every 12 inches of run. How would you determine if the slope of the ramp below is legal? Hear an explanation.

9 Real World Application
Complete the Slope for the Mathematically Inclined Worksheet.
