1 Slope of A LINE (Gradient)

2 Inquiry Questions What is a slope?
What symbol represents a slope mathematically? How do you find and solve for slope? What are the different types of slopes?

3 The gradient is how steep a line is.
Finding the Gradient The gradient is how steep a line is. Large gradient Small gradient

4 Slope/Gradient (m) Look at the relationship between rise and run in each of the lines. That would define the slope of the line. y X

5 Special cases Horizontal Line m= 0 Vertical Line m = undefined

6 Look at the relationship between the blue arrow and the red arrow
Line 1 Line 2

7 Gradient is calculated by dividing
How we do it in Maths Gradient is calculated by dividing Some examples of how to calculate gradients.

10 Finding the slope given two points
Find the slope of the line that passes through (2, 3) and (4, -1) Two ways to do this: With a picture or by inspection With a formula

11 Two ways: Do it on a graph Formula: m = y2-y1 x2-x1 Find the slope through (3, 2) and (-1, 5)

12 Find the slope of the lines that contain the following points
(1, 0) and (-2, 1) (2, 3) and (5, -2) (3, 3) and (1, -1)

13 Activity (notebook) Draw any picture you want using a minimum of 15 points. You may use only straight lines. Find the slope of each line label each one as positive, negative, 0, or undefined. Show how you found/solved the slope. (Use and divide the 2 ways you learned o find slope to verify your answer.)
