Persuasive Writing Persuade - to convince others to believe your claim (opinion) Appeal – to make an urgent request. When writing persuasively, authors appeal or request readers to believe their claim through 3 techniques. Persuasive techniques: Appeals by Association Emotional Appeals Loaded Language

Appeals by Association
Appeals by association make a connection between an idea or product and someone positive or influential. Bandwagon Appeal – Taps into someone’s desire to belong. “Everybody’s doing it”

2. Testimonial – uses celebrities, satisfied customers, or those who have experienced the idea/product to convince others.

3. Transfer – Connects a product, a candidate, or a cause with a positive image or idea. Ex. A vote for Proposition 43 is a vote for freedom.

Emotional Appeals Uses strong feelings, rather than facts, to persuade. Appeal to Pity – Taps into people’s compassion for others.

Emotional Appeals 2. Appeal to Fear – Preys upon people’s fear for their safety or the safety of their families.

Emotional Appeals 3. Appeal to Vanity – Uses flattery or the desire to feel good about yourself to win people over.

Loaded Language Words with positive connotation – call up favorable images, feelings, or experiences. Ex: Start your day with Morning Glory’s refreshing, all-natural juice. Words with negative connotation – may bring to mind unpleasant images, feelings, or experiences; often create a sense of distrust or unease. Ex: Who wants to hear the same tired, stale ideas? We need a candidate with a fresh vision.

Persuasive Writing Claim – a writer’s position on a problem or issue
Ex. Teenagers should not be allowed to use Social Media. Ex. The United States needs to convert to solar power. Support – reasons and EVIDENCE that are used to PROVE the claim is correct. Ex. One reason that teenagers should not be allowed to use Social Media is because of cyber bullying. Ex. One reason why the US needs to convert to solar power energy is because of air pollution.

Group Pro (for banning junk food in schools) Identify the claim of the “Yes” section, identify the author’s support, and persuasive techniques.
