1 Unit 3: Scientific Investigations
Carrying out a Heart Rate and Exercise Investigation

2 Starter Activity Draw a diagram of the heart. Add as many labels / annotations as you can.

3

4 HOMEWORK Get out the essay you started last lesson and completed for homework:

5 Lesson Objectives To plan and carry out an investigation into the effect of exercise on Heart Rate and Blood Pressure. To be able to identify the independent / dependent and control variables in an investigation. To be able to write a hypothesis based on a given scientific question

6 The Heart a Recap:

7 What is Blood Pressure?

8 Question: What effect does exercise have on heart rate and blood pressure? Fill in your planning sheet…

9 Preliminary Work Before carrying out an investigation, it is sometimes necessary to carry out some preliminary practical work. What do you think you may need to do before carrying out this investigation?

10 Find your pulse: You may need to work in pairs. Resting Heart Rate
Average, adult resting heart rate. Approx bpm

11 Find your blood pressure
Systolic=120 Diastolic = 80

12

13 Decide what sort of exercise.
Mild exercise. Walking briskly around the college and back (SAFELY) Jogging on the spot. Star jumps

14 Complete your investigation:

15 Evaluating your method:
Was there any parts of your method that could be improved? Re-write your method to make it better.

16 Writing a hypothesis from a question Task: for each question- write your own hypothesis Extension: can some experiments have another hypothesis? If I give my teacher chocolate, will they stop giving me homework? What effect does studying with music have on student test scores? What effect does light have on plant growth? What is the effect of watering plants on their growth height? Does the presence of leaves on trees affect the number of birds nests? Does acid rain in water affect the fish population? Does intake of calcium affect bone strength? Does the height of ramp affect the speed of a car? Does temperature affect the time taken for sugar to dissolve?

17 Hypothesis or Theory?

18 If I do …… then …… will happen Task: for each hypothesis write down the Independent variable and the dependent variable Extension: what control variables are there for each hypothesis? If I open the tap more, then it will increase the flow of water If I Raise the temperature of a cup of water , then the mass of sugar that dissolves will increase If a plant receives fertilizer, then it will grow to be bigger than a plant that does not receive fertilizer If I put fenders on a bicycle then they will keep the rider dry when riding through puddles
