Figure 1 | Old age, metabolites, and chronic inflammation. The study by Furman et al. shows that metabolites found to be elevated in certain elderly populations stimulate inflammation by activating monocytes and macrophages, neutrophils, and platelets1. Inflammasome priming and activation in monocytes and macrophages leads to interleukin (IL)-1β production, which contributes to chronic inflammation.
