Mission Earth: Fusing GLOBE with NASA Assets to Build Systemic Innovation in STEM Education Monthly Status (April 2018) Updates Updates (con’t) THE UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO: Planning for 2018 professional development for Career and Technical School teachers – collaborative effort with John Moore and Peter Dorofy (Palmyra Nature Center) and David Bydlowski and Andy Henry (AREN Project) Working with Marilé Colón Robles for the MUREP Educator Institute or MEI – area GLOBE trainers have volunteered to do the training Encouraged schools to participate in the GME SATELLITES Student Conference and the Midwest Regional Student Science Symposium (SRS); two teachers received funding On going participation in the Pilot Collaboration Campaign (being led by WestED/UC Berkeley) - Natural Science Technology Center (Career High School in Toledo Public Schools) Sara Mierzwiak created a video on GME and submitted it to STEM for All 2018 Video Showcase Sara Mierzwiak is taking the lead on helping GME Partners to load their information to GME GLOBE webpage Continue to work with GLOBE to have GME student research webpage for (K-16+) students to upload their research projects WestEd/UC BERKELEY: Lead GME Webinar #8– Local weather forecasting using GLOBE observations with Presenter: Dr. Susan Joy Hassol, Director of Climate Communications: science and outreach, on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 8:00 pm EDT and student follow up on Friday, April 20 Ongoing coaching of teachers in developing projects with their teachers; nearly all CA and NM teachers have engaged their students in small group projects. Preparation for Pacific Student Research Symposium (SRS) and support for NM teachers to attend SW SRS Scheduling of classroom observations and three observations completed Calibration of project rubric with teachers (focused on NGSS practices), and alignment of SRS poster template to rubric (to support standards attainment through GLOBE projects, as well as coherence between implementation and evaluation) Students from Carlsbad High School, NM, did soil protocol in McKittrick Canyon; students obtained a science research permit to do original research in a national park; they will submit all their notes, photos, and data to the park service as well as keeping notes for their own records. Development of materials to promote inter-school collaboration. BOSTON UNIVERSITY: Taking the lead in GME Webinar #9 Prepared materials from GLOBE and the Phenology Network (Lilac Phenology and Bud Burst) for teachers' use Bottle biology projects in at least three classrooms are going well. The phenological gardens are blooming in Providence and the teachers are taking their students out observe. Students are submitting budburst data to Nature's Notebook which is part of the US Phenological Network and is referred to in the Budburst and Greenup/Greendown GLOBE protocols. TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY: Diedra Richardson, Web Presence Coordinator, has begun adding content to the TSU GLOBE ME page on the globe.gov website. Dr. David A. Padgett expects to certify at least 20 new pre-service teachers in the GLOBE Atmosphere and Surface Temperature Protocols this spring via his World Regional Geography (GEOG 1010) course sections. Dr. Latoya Johnson and Dr. David Tiller, from TSU’s College of Education have been selected to participate in the NASA MEI workshop at the Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL in June. Dr. Padgett will also participate in the workshop assisting with the outdoor exercises. Approximately 30 participants are expected. Dr. Padgett presented at the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting (April 10-14, New Orleans, LA) and National Environmental Justice Conference (April 25-27, Washington, DC) based upon his efforts to implement GLOBE in vulnerable communities throughout the Southeastern US in partnership with formal and informal educational institutions. Dr. Padgett and Pamela Bingham attended the National Environmental Justice Conference. Dr. Clara Young-White successfully attained IRB approval for TSU’s GLOBE PD materials. The in-service teacher GLOBE PD is planned for summer and fall Two teachers will be recruited from each of the four partner high schools. NASA LANGLEY: Marilé Colón Robles working with UT on training NASA Education Specialists for the MUREP Educator Institute or MEI hosted session. Discussions on GME metrics and planning of ‘best practices’ sharing among the groups. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/SUPPORT WORKING GROUP: Working on updating visual display of the Science Research Process (currently, there are four versions on the GLOBE website) and gathering related documents from website Received an update on the Collaboration Campaign from Tracy Ostrom-all is going well ENGINEERING WORKING GROUP: Boston University - Caleb Farney developed a manual on how to build a weather station with Arduino. The group will review the manual. Palmyra Cove Nature Center- John Moore and Peter Dorofy are working with IceSat 2 people and Peder with Landsat connections to further develop the hologlobe visualization tool. University of Toledo - Glenn Lipscomb has a group of students working on water quality sensors. Fredonia University - Mike Jabot is building Arduino based sensors and working with middle school teachers and their kids. He is having another GLOBE survivor camp this summer to do Python. Preparing their session entitled Establishing an Engineering Focus for GLOBE (1.5 hours) at the Annual GLOBE Meeting in Ireland which will include David Bydlowski from the AREN Project PRE-SERVICE WORKING GROUP: Working with Marilé Colón Robles for the MUREP Educator Institute or MEI. GLOBE will be the theme for the institutes at the NASA Centers this year. WEB PRESENCE WORKING GROUP: Each Partner is working on their section of the Mission EARTH GLOBE webpage. Involvement of the AREN project in Elizabeth City PD on April 13 and at TSU in May. Working with Elena Sparrow, SIGNS Project, to connect two teachers (one from Alaska and one from Detroit, MI). Exposing Students to Subject Matter Experts GLOBE Mission EARTH is exploring different ways their Subject Matter Experts can connect with students. Here are just a few examples of the opportunities made available to students. Face-to-Face Dr. Czajkowski, University of Toledo GLOBE scientist for the Urban Heat Island Effect Campaign, visits local schools and assists in surface temperature data collection. Students at Jackman Road Elementary in Michigan learn how scientists use their data. Online Students from Croatia and Toledo, OH learned about the website from Tracy Ostrom (GME West) and networking opportunities within NASA and the GLOBE program from Jessica Taylor, NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). University of California Berkeley Graduate Student, Alexis Shusterman, from Department of Chemistry Atmospheric Science works with high schools students from Oakland's Skyline HS on their research project for the GLOBE Pacific Student Research Symposium. Dr. Czajkowski holds web-meetings with students from Freeport High School and talks about the GLOBE surface temperature protocol. Kevin Czajkowski/Mission EARTH
