Read the excerpt below. Identify the sentence fragments from this particular paragraph. Write them on your paper. Walker uses sentence fragments such as “Ten, twelve years?” and “And Dee. to create an informal tone. Hint: Look for sentences lacking a subject or verb.

7 Summarizer Connection back to the Art In a brief paragraph, compare and contrast the story with the art of Romare Bearden.

8 Journal Time: Think about the objects in your home.
Which objects have been passed down from other family members? Why do they continue to have a place in your home? If you were to move away to live on your own, which objects in your home would you want to take with you? Explain why for each object selected. How would your parent/guardian feel about you taking each item? Explain your response.

9 Activator Create a box on your paper that is as wide as the margins and about 10 lines down the page. In this box you are going to make a Word Splash. Include every word you can think of that represents the story. You can put names of people, names of places, figurative language, southern literature examples, etc. Fill up your box.

11 Your Task! Look at the model essay given to you. Notice all of the textual evidence in the story to help answer the prompt. Begin writing your essay.

12 In conclusion Provide 5 characteristics of Southern Literature as identified in the reading of “Everyday Use.” Remember… the chart on the board and your anticipation guide lists the specific characteristics we’ve discussed so far. 
