Anaerobic Respiration– Cellular Respiration Without Oxygen
Packet #14 Chapter #4
2
Anaerobic Respiration I
For most animal and plant cells, glycolysis is only a prelude {first set of stages} to the final stages of the breakdown of food molecules. In animals, such as humans, oxygen is used in later stages to complete the breakdown of food molecules.
3
Anaerobic Respiration II
However, for organisms that do not use oxygen, and are able to grow and divide without it, glycolysis is the principle source of a cell’s ATP.
4
Anaerobic Respiration II
If no oxygen is available, the pyruvates formed at the end of glycolysis do not enter the Kreb’s Cycle but follow other pathways known fermentation pathways.
5
Anaerobic Fermentation IV
There are two fermentation pathways Lactate Acid fermentation Produces lactic acid Causes cramps in muscles Alcoholic fermentation Produces ethanol & CO2 Produced by yeast cells Helps rise bread during baking.
