1 Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

2 Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs
Auto = self Autotrophs make their own food Heterotrophs Hetero = different Heterotrophs get their food from something else (they have to eat it)

3 Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs
What are some examples of autotrophs? What are some examples of heterotrophs?

4 Photosynthesis

5 Photosynthesis - Chemical Reaction
6CO2 + 6 H2O + light energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2 Six molecules of carbon dioxide react with six molecules of water to form 1 molecule of glucose and six molecules of oxygen.

6 Photosynthesis The process of changing light energy to chemical energy
Occurs in plants and some algae Plants need light energy, CO2, and H2O Converts the sun’s energy into chemical energy stored as sugar Takes place in specialized structures inside plant cells called chloroplasts Chlorophyll is the pigment that absorbs sunlight.

7 What happens during photosynthesis?
Plants capture light energy and use that energy to make glucose Sunlight provides the energy needed by chlorophyll to change molecules of carbon dioxide and water into glucose Oxygen is also released in this reaction

8 Cellular Respiration

9 What is Cellular Respiration?
A process in which cells use oxygen to release energy stored in sugars. Where does Cellular Respiration occur? - Cellular Respiration takes place in cell organelles called mitochondria.

10 Cellular Respiration Happens in both plant and animal cells
Overall Reaction: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP

11 What is Cellular Respiration?
Reactants: - Sugars (glucose) (C6H12O6) - Oxygen (O2) Products: - Energy (ATP) - Carbon Dioxide (CO2) - Water (H2O)

12 Adenosine triphosphate
What is ATP? Adenosine triphosphate a nucleotide found in the mitochondria of all plant and animal cells ATP transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism.

13 Cellular Respiration Aero = oxygen Aerobic Respiration – makes energy
Anaerobic Respiration – Fermentation
