Cell Respiration Lab # 5
2
Overview Dormant seeds are used
A seed contains a plant embryo and a food supply surrounded by a seed coat When germination occurs the rate of cellular respiration greatly increases.
3
In this lab Measure the oxygen consumption during germination
Measure the change in gas volume in respirometers Germinating seeds Nongerminating seeds Measure the rate of respiration of peas at different temperatures.
4
Introduction Aeorbic cellular respiration is the oxidation of glucose.
Oxygen is required for this energy-releasing process to occur. C6G12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6 H2O kilocalories of energy/mole of glucose oxidized.
5
Measuring Cellular Respiration
3 Ways 1. Consumption of O2 How many moles of O2 are consumed? 2. Production of CO2 How many moles of CO2 are produced? 3. Release of energy during cellular respiration.
6
The General Gas Law PV = nRT P = the pressure of the gas,
V = the volume of the gas, n = the number of molecules of gas, R = the gas constant (its value is fixed), T = the temperature of the gas (in degrees K)
7
Gas law implies If T and P are constant, then V is proportional to n.
If T and V are constant, then P is proportional to
