1 Cellular Respiration

2 Cellular Respiration The complex process in which cells make ATP by breaking down organic compounds

3 Cellular Respiration Done by both heterotrophs and autotrophs
by autotrophs and heterotrophs Carbon dioxide and water PHOTOSYNTHESIS by autotrophs Organic compounds and oxygen Done by both heterotrophs and autotrophs The products of cellular respiration are the reactants of photosynthesis

4 Cellular Respiration Glycolysis Aerobic Respiration
Organic compounds are changed into three-carbon molecules of pyruvic acid Produces a small amount of ATP and NADH (a carrier molecule) Anaerobic – does not require oxygen Aerobic Respiration Breaks down the pyruvic acid and NADH is used to make LARGE amount of ATP Aerobic – requires oxygen

5 No oxygen? What happens when there is no oxygen present and aerobic respiration can’t occur? Fermentation Does NOT produce ATP Recycles NAD+ and NADH so that glycolysis can continue Produces lactic acid, ethyl alcohol and or other compounds
