1
What are cells made up of?
Looking Inside Cells
3
An Animal Cell
4
A Plant Cell
5
Cell Wall No Cell Wall Here Found only in plant cells
Hard Layer of dead material that surrounds plant cells. Made of cellulose Function- protects and supports the cell. Stiff but H2O and O2 can pass through No Cell Wall Here
6
Cell Membrane- found in both plants and animals
Found on the outside of the cell in animals and just inside the cell wall of plants Function- Control what goes in and out of the cell via osmosis, diffusion, or active transport
7
Nucleus Function- Control Center of the cell
8
Parts of the nucleus 1. Nuclear membrane- protects the nucleus and lets molecules in and out. 2. Chromatin- the genetic material (DNA) that provides the instructions for the production of proteins that run the cell. 3. Nucleolus- where ribosomes are made.
9
Organelles in the Cytoplasm
Ribosomes Endoplasmic Reticulum Vacuole Golgi Body Mitochondria Cytoplasm Chloroplast Lysosomes
10
Cytoplasm Area between the cell membrane and the nucleus. Gel like.
Contains the organelles Transports materials and substances around the cell.
11
Mitochondria Power House of the Cell
Turns energy in our food (glucose) into energy the cell can use (ATP).
12
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Flattened sacs attached to the nucleus Where ribosomes are located and therefore site of protein synthesis (production)
13
Ribosomes Small grain like bodies on the ER or in the cytoplasm that makes protein
14
Golgi Body Flattened sacs that package and distribute proteins and other molecules both inside and for export outside the cell.
15
Chloroplasts Chloroplasts Large green structures
Captures energy from the sun Site of photosynthesis- which makes food for the cell. Gives plants their green color
16
Vacuoles Central Vacuole in plants Large round water filled sac.
In both plants and animals Stores food, water, and waste
17
Lysosomes Small round organelles that break down food pieces and cell parts
18
Bacteria Different from plant and animal cells
Has cell wall and cell membrane No nucleus or other organelles
19
Specialized Cells Muscle Cells Fat cells Blood Cells Nerve Cells
Throat Cells- produce mucus Blood Cells Fat cells
