2. SOUND
Opening sound of the kick of the football is quite funny because it’s a manufactured – creates a sense of comedy and a cartoon effect adding the unrealistic feel of the sequence
Voiceover of the football commentator Gary Lineker and the mention of Man United are British football Icons which tell us straight away that this is a football related film with a slight comedic sense to it due to Gary’s history in comedy acting, e.g. Walkers Adverts
The crowd’s and music band creates a soundscape of the football stadium, they are diegetic sounds because the protagonists in the film can hear the sound, it draws you into the scene and the audience are able to recognise what’s going on as it is realistic to a real stadium.
Sound of the football being kicked about is hyperbolic, the sound is exaggerated to emphasise the fact that football is the main theme of the film
The dialogue of the commentators has a scripted feel, its not flowing naturally, it lacks expression and emotion, which adds to the sense of surrealism.
The dialogue of the mother shows the culture and background of the protagonists due to the Indian accent, and the difference between the more mainstream Britain and the traditional Indian family

3. MISE-EN-SCENE
Set in a football stadium, with Man United playing against another team which is apparent because the players wearing the Man United football kit, and we are shown real football players like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs increasing verisimilitude. (Real British football icons)
Bright lights highlight the white shorts worn by the Man United making the colours seem brighter therefore creating a magical sense to the players.
The middle aged women in the crowd is the only female in the crowd. Everyone is happy and cheering whereas she has negative body language her body is side ways on to the match which gives the impression that she is disapproving of the event. Much like the protagonists mother.
The studio colours are dull colours such as black and white, which creates a contrast between the players kits, the colours create a hazy atmosphere. The suits worn are very formal unlike normal football pundits. It immediately signifies there is something different to this match report. The formality of the studio and suits create a contrast with the comedy which is created by the Indian mother.
Jess’ bedroom is not stereotypical of a teenage girl. there are no signs of make up or fashionable clothes,shes wearing a tracksuit showing she's into sport. The room does not follow typical generic conventions of a Indian teenage girls room. The flowers on the wall are covered up by David Beckham merchandise. This represents her trying escape her culture and feminity to an extent and assert her passion for football.
David Beckham is lit above her, suggesting he is God like, as if she worships him, however when her mum turns off the TV the image disappears showing her mother is ultimately the one in the film who is crushing Jess’ dreams.

4. EDITING
Wipe = the image of the football is used as the wipe which changes the scene from titles to stadium. This technique creates a comic like and unrealistic feel to it, almost dream like / fake.
Cuts on action = there are cuts on the movement of the ball between players, helps move the scene along.
Cross-cutting = cuts from person to person on the pitch, relates voiceover to the shot.
Slow motion/replay = the replay is slowed down and the motion is slower, this technique causes the audience to draw their attention and focus to the action on screen.
A zoom from still = the zoom out from the still image of Beckham and Jess symbolises the surrealism of the scene and relates it back to a T.V. interview.
Sound Bridge = this is used over the opening titles, the sound is of the crowd, football match and commentator. The use of this technique is to prepare the audience for what is yet to come.
Short reverse shot = this is used during the football interview and Jess’s room. This technique causes comedy due to cuts from different camera angles and establishing shots. The introduction of the Indian mother creates more comedy as she was not shown in the original establishing shot but then appears in a second more widen version.

5. CAMERA
Establishing shot = Football pitch, this shot makes the audience feel as if a huge task is ahead for the main character to overcome. The establishing shot of the interview scene also helps to create comedy due to editing techniques.
Tracking shot = used to follow the ball and crowd during the stadium scene. Gives the viewers a chance to feel part of what’s going on.
Pan shot = used to follow the players during the match, helps audience to relate to the action.
High angle shot = used almost like an establishing shot of the overall pitch, showing a view of the players during their game. Gives the audience time to take in what’s going on in the overall scene.
Close up/mid shot/two shot = used to show detail and body language between characters. Signifies importance of the action and allows audience to appreciate the relationship between characters. E.g. Jess and her mother – disapproving her choice of hobbies, Jess and David Beckham – her admiration for her, or Gary Lineker and interviewees – formalness of the interview and his facial expressions bring a sense of comedy and un-naturalism to the scene.

6. TITLES
The titles are presented in a boring and practical manner. This can be seen as a male gender representation, as man can be seen to be more practical compared to females who are more imaginative and creative. They used serif font type which is quite a formal font type.
Therefore this means it does not represent the stereotypical conventions on the protagonist in the movie, but however does represent the protagonists true personality of tom-boy and masculinity components.
The orange and black colours of the titles relate back to the Indian flag, which represents the main culture in the film.
The film also uses British Film company names, it also uses big film companies names so this leads to a big build of expectation towards the film for the audience.

7. NARRATIVE
The opening sequence is based on the main characters day-dream whilst watching a football match. After the titles are shown, the movie moves into Old Trafford stadium, Manchester, where Man United are playing a football match. The match ends when the last goal is scored by the protagonist, Jess however we know jess cant possibly be in the match as girls aren't part of male teams so immediately we begin to think it’s a dream. We next find ourselves in a Match of the Day like program where we are introduced to Gary Lineker and Jess’s Mother. Jess then awakens from her day-dream as her mother is calling her who then enters her room.
