4 Example Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est” makes clear the damage, both short- and long-term, war causes on soldiers. Through his description of battle, dreams, and false encouragement, Owen shows us just how devastating war can be to the body and mind. War has been a constant in human history, but while war may be part of the human experience, Owen’s account reminds us it should not be undertaken lightly—or, perhaps, undertaken at all. A world free of war would be a world free of at least one reason for the human soul to feel the burden of pain and death. Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est” reveals the effects war has upon soldiers both during and after battle.

5 [Another] Example Immigrants from across the globe have entered the United States in search of a better life; some found it, enriching the nation, and others found only hatred. From early European explorers seeking new sources of wealth to Irish immigrants seeking relief from hunger to Mexican immigrants seeking a chance for a living wage, the immigrant experience has been varied and all too often fraught with conflict. Even today, with America’s borders closed to Syrian refugees seeking that most primal need—life itself— immigration remains in the media. Perhaps this is the moment the nation needs—a chance to right the ill treatment of thousands of immigrants who came before, a chance to give a better life to a people in desperate need. Immigration patterns shifted over time in terms of country of origin and impact on the United States.
