4 Population density within the South West
12/02/2007 Event Name Here Project Name: HMRC v1.8 Population context Population density within the South West The South West is the third largest English geography (following the South and East, and Midlands), with a population of 9.2 million. The South West accounts for 15% of the total UK population and represents 17% of the English population. Population projection: the population of the South West is expected to rise steadily by 10% to 10.8 million by 2032. This is in line with the expected increase for the total English population (10%) and slightly above that for the total UK population (9%). 20% of the South West population is aged over 65, the highest proportion in the UK (18% England, 18% UK, 2014). Population projection: The percentage of those aged over 65 is expected to rise to 26% by 2032, from 20% in This is consistent with that for the overall English and UK populations. 5 Situational Analysis findings
KEY CHARACTERISTICS & FACTORS AFFECTING THE GEOGRAPHY Cancer trends Prevalence: The South West has an estimated cancer population of 334,700 (2010), which represents 3.5% of the population, the largest proportion of all English geographies. (estimated to be 669,000 by 2030). Incidence: The South West has a crude cancer incidence rate of 581 (average number per year, , per 100,00), the highest rate of all English geographies. 1- and 5-year diagnosis: The South West has the largest 1- and 5-year survival rates in England (70% and 51% respectively). This combination of high prevalence, incidence and survival points to the potential for a large cohort of those living with and beyond cancer. Cancer care A number of themes recur across the cancer care pathway. There are a range of projects, programmes and resources that are working well in some areas of the geography (including the Recovery Package, Evidence-Based Learning Programme, Holistic Needs Assessments) but are inconsistently and unevenly available.. Patients perspective Local intelligence cited certain issues regarding provision of care and support, including: poor access to diagnostic pathways; inconsistent provision of the Recovery Package and Holistic Needs Assessments; unclear pathways of patient care and a sense of ‘abandonment’ after treatment.

6 Our priorities for the next five years:
South West Geography Our priorities for the next five years: We have identified five priority areas of work to maximise Macmillan’s impact in the South West and help us improve service delivery, patient experience and outcomes 6

7 1. To better understand how to respond to the needs of people living with cancer across the South West in the context of rurality, hidden/ hard to reach communities and older population. 2. To ensure people with cancer have access to consistent care and support during the early phase of their cancer journey. 3. To have a greater understanding and meeting the needs of people with cancer in the South West 4. To grow, develop and support a sustainable workforce across the South West to best meet the needs of people affected by and living with cancer. 5. To ensure people living with and affected by cancer have a quality and consistent experience across the whole cancer pathway. 7
