Chapter 12 In Chapter 12 of Lord of the Flies, the naval officer, seeing the boys arrayed like savages and the island on fire, asks Ralph with a grin: “What have you been doing? Having a war or something?” At the end of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, the author, then age twelve, writes about a woman consoling a sobbing man, “She seemed to know a little more about war than the rest of us.”

What is war? What war was fought in Lord of the Flies? Why was it fought? What was the Beast? From whose perspective did we get war from in the memoir? How did it differ from Lord of the Flies? What is war a time for, according to Thirty Seconds to Mars’ music video? Are there similarities between their description of war and the two readings?

Study Sync Question Compose an essay of at least 3 paragraphs where you: Explain what you learned about war as it is represented in Lord of the Flies and A Long Way Gone.
