1 CHAPTER 3 By; Demi Nelson, Arianna Adams, Jace Ogorchock, Tommy Seros, Caitlyn Pence, Mariah Valenzuela

2 Social

3 Separatists vs. Puritans
Felt they had to share the Church of England with the “damned” so they broke away from the Church believed only “visible saints” should be granted a Church Membership Puritans: Believed in Calvinism Predestination Everyone was predestined and good works could not save you if you were predestined for Hell Wanted to purify the Church of England

4 Social Covenant Social Covenant:
Between the Puritan communities with each other no privacy mutual watchfulness no deviance The average life expectancy was 70 years of age. Women were married at 22 and men were 27 and the average family had about 6 children. Men controlled the household while women stayed at home and cared for the children.

5 Puritans vs. Indians Puritans had a new young minister in Salem, Roger Williams. He did not give compensation to the Indians, causing a poor relationship between the Puritans and Indians. The diseases the white men brought wiped out three-fourths of the Native American population, all the while the Indians were attacking and being attacked by the Puritans. The Pilgrim-Wampanoag Peace Treaty was therefore signed in 1621 by Chief Massasoit and the Puritans. In the autumn of 1621, the first Thanksgiving was held between these two groups.

6 Puritans vs. Indians Native Americans united under Metacom (King Philip), the son of Massasoit. These united Native Americans started a war between themselves and the white men, known as King Philips War to the white men, and it lasted from Native Americans attacks took place on the New England settlements, causing the New England frontier settlements to retreat to Boston. This ended in defeat for the Indians, and Metacom was beheaded and his family sold into slavery.

7 Political

8 Political The Mayflower Compact Rhode Island becomes the sewer
a form of a political structure was an agreement that formed an underdeveloped government. Rhode Island becomes the sewer Dumping grounds for those who didn't follow the religious and political structure. Rhode Island was the most liberal than any other colony. King Philip’s War Indians unite in a revolt against the white settlers to keep the possibility of them getting thrown out of their lands. Ended in failure for the indians, they were never a serious threat in New England again.

10 Religion Calvinism was the basis for all religion in early America.
The religions that branched out of this were Puritans and Separatists The Quaker religion was not based off of Calvinism, but it was also popular in the colonies. Religion was what made the colonies flourish, everything was based on religion in some way. Religion and problems within it was the main driving reason for leaving Britain and colonizing Religion was also what government revolved around

11 Religion Puritans- Extremists from the Calvinistic faith who were unhappy with what the church became in Britain Protestants who wanted to refine the church and have a new start Believed in predestination where a person was either predestined to heaven of hell and there was nothing you could do about it “The Elect” were the few who had been predestined to heaven “Covenant of Grace” promise between them and God mutual watchfulness and very low toleration of disorder with no privacy

12 Religion Separatists-
Came with the Puritans on the Mayflower but had slightly different beliefs about how the church should act Once they reached land they separated themselves (hence their name) These people were less extreme and did not want to live with the extreme lifestyle of the Puritans Their settlements worried the Puritans because they feared more people would want to convert to be Separatist

13 Religion Quakers- Started in Britain where they were very mistreated.
They were forced to pay taxes to the Anglican church which they despised and didn't even attend. Were offended by religion and laws and commonly went against them which caused them to be disliked. They were very religious and often spoke their minds. The ventured to America to have their own church and new life. In Britain they were being persecuted for their religion and William Penn in a sense lead them to America. They were a simple people with a simple lifestyle and meeting house.

14 Religion Different colonies had different religious preferences and tolerances Pennsylvania was Founded by William Penn who was Quaker and this became the place for Quakers to reside. Rhode Island was the land of “riff raff” and they had toleration for multiple religions. Maryland was the “haven for Catholics” (most colonies did not tolerate Catholics).

15 Intellectual

16 Intellectual - Anne Hutchinson started the idea of antinomianism.
- This image displayed the art that used propaganda in the colonies, they often portrayed the enemies as wrong or inferior to the colonists. - Predestination was an important belief of the Calvinists, they felt that your fate is decided before you can influence it with your life.

17 Intellectual -The Separatists the left England were going against the norm and started a movement towards the New World. -King Philip's War had the Native Americans unite to resist the white settlers from taking their land, they rebelled but eventually failed. ( ) -Calvinism was growing in popularity amongst the Puritans, many convert as they hear of an “angry God”. This shows a movement and changes the religious structure in the Puritan church.

18 Economics

19 YO YO Its all About Economics
The promise of riches especially from golden-leaved tobacco drew the first settlers to the southern colonies. It was an easy growing crop where colonist could still make money and trade throughout time. In fact, most indentured servants were young men drawn from England’s “middling classes.” Indentured servants were needed with the labor of growing crops and the amount of labor that was needed. They were usually farmers who needed jobs in England so they came down and became an indentured servant. In time the frail colony found economic legs in fur, fish, and lumber. These were the resources that helped the colonies grow in economics. Plymouth was never important economically or numerically.
