“Araby” 1. How would you describe the narrator as a character? What word or words describe him well? Why? From Pink Pancakes Not only does he seem easily influenced and impacted by his surroundings and environment as the story progresses but he is naïve, socially awkward, isolated.
7
“Araby” 2. How would you describe the setting, or the environment, of the story? What does this setting contribute to the story? From a team with no name This story has a noticeably dark setting. There are several times the narrator mentions some form of darkness, as a matter of fact the words dark or darkness are used nine times throughout the story. This does not include his use for the storm or shadows that are also symbolic of darkness.

“Araby” 3. Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic, that is, something that seems to have more meaning than what it literally is. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? From Team 2 All the darkness in the streets symbolizes the narrator because it shows the emptiness he has inside and how he feels alone with not much around him, but darkness.

“Araby” 3. Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic, that is, something that seems to have more meaning than what it literally is. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? From Catch these hands brother man Something that could be considered symbolism is the gift that he was trying to buy for her. He goes to the bazaar to buy Mangan’s sister a gift to show his love for her. His love shows because he tried very hard to get to the bazaar for her and it was constantly on his mind. In the end he ends up not buying her anything and stands there in darkness giving up his shot of love that he might’ve gotten.

“Araby” 3. Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic, that is, something that seems to have more meaning than what it literally is. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? From RB & J The story takes place in a dark setting, being described as a “blind end.” Mangan’s sister is always described as illuminated, “her figure defined by the light,” almost as if she is the light of the narrator’s life. In the end of the story, the “light was out” at the bazaar. He then sees himself as “a creature driven and derided by vanity.”

“Araby” 3. Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic, that is, something that seems to have more meaning than what it literally is. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? From a team with no name I think when he over hears the people talking at the end of the story could mean a lot to the story. The people are arguing about something like “he said, she said.” This could of brought something to the narrators mind.

“Araby” Another symbol: Araby
“’If I go,’ I said, ‘I will bring you something.’”

“Araby” 5. Finish the sentence below to express what you think is a good one-sentence summary of the main theme (or the comment about life) that we should get from the story “Araby.” From RB & J James Joyce’s “Araby” shows us how people often get their hopes up by fantasizing too often about rather unrealistic ideas and notions.
14
“Araby” 6. If you write an essay on this story, what would be three or four good topics for the body paragraphs of the essay?

Look Carefully at the Details!
“Araby” Look Carefully at the Details! “At nine o'clock I heard my uncle's latchkey in the hall door. I heard him talking to himself and heard the hallstand rocking when it had received the weight of his overcoat. I could interpret these signs. When he was midway through his dinner I asked him to give me the money to go to the bazaar. He had forgotten.”

“Araby” Questions?

“Eveline” “She sat at the window watching the evening invade the avenue.”

“Eveline” 1. How would you describe Eveline as a character? What word or words describe her well? Why? From ENTERTAINMENT I think Eveline can be described as hardworking, caring, and indecisive. Hardworking because even though she deals with the abuse from her father, she still makes sure to take care of the children. Caring, for the same reason. She continues to care for them and she wants what’s best for everyone. Indecisive because she takes a while to think of a certain situation, and weighs the pros and cons of each side before deciding. Yet she still changes her mind at the last minute.
21
“Eveline” 1. How would you describe Eveline as a character? What word or words describe her well? Why? From eman maet I would describe Eveline’s character as attached and sentimental. She is attached because she doesn’t want to leave her family because she cares so much for them and feels at home like she should with her family which makes her sentimental.
22
“Eveline” 1. How would you describe Eveline as a character? What word or words describe her well? Why? From #failing Eveline is a very caring character and has a hard time leaving her father even though he was abusive. Eveline still tries to keep her promise to her mother to take care of the family after she passes away. The narrator describes her as hardworking as “she had to work hard, both in the house and at business.” She is also very forgiving as she always thinks of good memories with her family even after experiences abuse.
23
“Eveline” 1. How would you describe Eveline as a character? What word or words describe her well? Why? From Ben She was thrust into a difficult situation when her mother died, and since then she has been unable to assert herself. She doesn’t have any confidence, and is abused by her father.
24
“Eveline” 2. How would you describe the setting, or the environment, of the story? What does this setting contribute to the story? From S’mores This sense of setting is faintly portrayed to be a small area with hardly any other people around. The narrator says, “though she was over nineteen, she sometimes felt herself in danger of her father's violence:” not only describing the father’s violence, but even a sense of isolation with nowhere to turn to. Near coast line with her only escape seeming to be a sailor in sight.
25
“Eveline” 2. How would you describe the setting, or the environment, of the story? What does this setting contribute to the story? From Team Frank Eveline’s house is described as dusty and sad which contributes to Eveline being conflicted because it makes her want to get out and start a new life that is positive and hopeful. We think the setting brings the darkness of the house and the family into Eveline’s personality.
26
“Eveline” 2. How would you describe the setting, or the environment, of the story? What does this setting contribute to the story? From L.P.J. The environment of this story is depressing. For example, this can be seen with the high toll of departing people. Rather they are leaving or dying this sets the depressing tone of the story. Another example of this is the abuse that Eveline has to suffer through in the story. She talked about how her father abused her siblings when they were younger, and now he is threating to abuse her as well.
27
“Eveline” 2. How would you describe the setting, or the environment, of the story? What does this setting contribute to the story? From I fell outside and tripped and I think I ate a rock The place she’s sitting in is old, brown, and covered in dust, and she is surrounded by new red brick buildings. Her old and dirty environment is a symbol of how she’s mentally stuck in the past. Eveline constantly thinks about the good days when she was a child, how her father used to be, and of her dying mother. This is contrasted by the new red buildings to show that while she stays in the past, the rest of the world is moving on.
28
“Eveline” 3. Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic, that is, something that seems to have more meaning than what it literally is. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? From Vicker’s Insurance One thing that could be symbolic is the presence of dust in the story. The dust could represent her past, which is what is holding her back from leaving her home. It could also represent how dreary and sad her life is.
29
“Eveline” 3. Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic, that is, something that seems to have more meaning than what it literally is. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? From ENTERTAINMENT I believe the theatre stands for more than just a show/date between Eveline and Frank. I think it symbolizes the adventure and escape that she longs for, and doesn’t end up taking. I think it means a lot to Eveline, not only because it’s a date, but because she gets to go watch a show and it feels as if she isn’t in the home anymore.
30
“Eveline” 3. Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic, that is, something that seems to have more meaning than what it literally is. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? From Purple Monkeys The sea is symbolic because it shows freedom for Eveline. It also is an opportunity for love because she will be able to start a new life with her boyfriend and get away from the bad things at home.
31
“Eveline” 3. Identify at least one thing in the story that you think might be symbolic, that is, something that seems to have more meaning than what it literally is. What might this symbolism contribute to the story? From One Scoop Frank’s boat could be symbolic to a sense that it represents a new beginning and a better life. The boat would take her to a new land where she doesn’t know anyone and wouldn’t have to be afraid any longer of her father’s harsh words or potential actions. Although she in the end decided to stay, it was still symbolic to being able to start over. The black mass of the boat could also show how the boat and everything it brought along would bring her nothing and have her start her new life with nothing, leaving everything she knows and has behind.
