Information has impact if it affects a lot of people. How does the event impact the audience? Example: A bomb explosion that killed three people in Gaza City. Example: Proposed tax income increase. Election campaign in South Africa.

information has proximity if it involves something happened somewhere nearby How close is the event to you? Example: A bus crash in Khan Younis that killed 5 people. Example: Car accident in India that killed 25 people.

Information has timeliness if it happened recently, as defined by the publication cycle How recently did (or will) the event happen? Live event? The more time that passes, the less newsworthy a story is. For "Newsweek," events that happened during the previous week For a daily newspaper, however, events that happened during the 24 hours since the last edition of the paper For CNN Headline News, events that happened during the past half hour

Information has unusualness if it involves something unusual or strange. Charles A. Dana, a famous editor, once said, If a dog bites a man, that's not news. But if a man bites a dog, that's news!

Information has prominence if it involves a well-known person or organization Example: If the Prime Minister travels to Iran. Example: Actor Adel Imam meets with Egyptian President Mohammed Morsy.

Audiences with different socio- cultural, political and ethnic backgrounds relate to the outside world in different ways. Example: The Muslim Brotherhood wins a big majority in Egyptian elections. Example: Afghans Taliban seizes major city in fight with US forces. Sri Lankan Government imposes new taxes.

Information has conflict if it involves some kind of disagreement between two or more people or parties. Conflict and tension is more interesting than peace. Example: Conflict between Free Syrian Army and Syrian regime forces. Fateh and Hamas disagree on responsibility for current situation.
