Fascist Italy In schools children recited, ”Mussolini is always right.” They were required to show total obedience to “il Duce” or Mussolini.

In the 1930’s “il duce” used foreign conquests to distract Italians from the economic depression at home. Mussolini was fixed on restoring the glory of the Roman Empire.

As a first step in building the new Roman Empire, Mussolini invaded Ethiopia in 1935. The Ethiopian military was no match for the Italian tanks and aircraft.

Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia called on the League of Nations for help with very little help. France and Britain had their own economic problems in 1935 and were unwilling to risk another war after WWI.

Rise of Nazi Germany Like Mussolini Adolf Hitler took German anger about the Treaty of Versailles and used it to his advantage. As studied earlier Hitler would create and organize the Nazi Party.

Rise of Nazi Germany Hitler preached a message of anti-semetic, religious and racial hatred. Hitler claimed Germans belong to a superior “Aryan” race and blamed the Jews for Germany’s troubles.

Rise of Nazi Germany He also blamed the Jews for Germany’s loss of WWI which was false, but Germans bought the message considering the times. Hitler was a powerful speaker and had the power to mesmerize his audience.

Hitler Comes to Power In 1933 Hitler became Chancellor of Germany.
By early 1935 Hitler had destroyed democratic rule in Germany creating a totalitarian state.- Single party controls the government and every aspect of the lives of the German people.

Hitler Comes to Power As Nazi power grew attacks on Jewish people increased. Jews were rounded up and sent to Concentration camps Hitler would enact his “Final Solution” which was the extermination of the Jewish people in Europe.

Hitler Comes to Power Hitler built up the German military in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler also said he had the right to expand to the East.

Hitler Comes to Power The League of Nations condemned Hitler, but did nothing. Hitler Said, “Europe will never act, they will just protest, and they will always be too late.”
