Mailbu 1997 Chevy reintroduced the Malibu, hoping it takes over the spot of mid-sized Sedan. Robert Lutz was responsible for the reinvention of the Malibu in 2003. Studied the Camry and Accord for weeks to find weaknesses and to exploit them. After the redesign, the Malibu won an award for “Mid-sized car of the year.” “This vaults Chevy straight to the top of the mid-sized sedan game.” as stated by Kelley Blue book.

GM’s Problem “A perception of inferior quality is the most serious problem facing GM.” Even when GM produces a prizewinner and receives various awards, consumers still favor a Toyota or Honda. The Camry outsold the Malibu 437,000 to 177,000.

Obama Recognizes GM is making high quality cars.
Obama administration finds the awards for the Malibu and Buick encouraging. The government is willing to negotiate tax cuts and debt reductions for GM. However, the government cannot force consumers to buy GM made vehicles.

Kansas City Plant GM assembly plant for the Malibu.
Largest taxpayer in Kansas City. Employs 2,500 at the plant and twice as many at local suppliers. Ranks among most efficient plants in America. Even with local pride, the Camry still outsold the Malibu in Kansas City, 2,200 to 1,300.

Financial Crisis US automakers are on pace to sell 9 million vehicles this coming year. Crisis can play in GM’s favor. Recent survey stated 72% of consumers are willing to buy US made cars to help boost the economy. Economy is forcing GM to downsize and sell off car brands.

Solutions GM is finally stating their awards in advertisements.
Allowing more test drives and rentals of the Malibu. After allowing test drives, they had more approvals from potential buyers. “Malibu, I think, has begun to breakthrough the negative awareness barrier.” –Robert Lutz
