promotes extended responses, and
enables you to write linguistically complex sentences.

tells why

4. but is used to show a change of direction
I did well on my vocabulary test, but I did not do so well on my math test.

5. So is a conjunction that tells the result, or effect, of something.
For example, It was a hot day, so we went to the beach.
