Enzymes Unit: Ecology
2
Enzymes are… Proteins -made of amino acids -shape is important!
3
Enzymes are… 2. Catalysts -speed up chemical reactions
4
Enzymes are… 3. Specific -shape “fits” with a specific substrate
5
Enzymes are… 4. Reusable -after a chemical reaction, they can be used again
6
Enzymes can be… Denatured
Which means they do not work anymore because their shape is changed. Caused by change in: Temperature pH

Product- what you end with, what the substrate turns into (ex. Water and oxygen) Substrate- what an enzyme works on (ex. Hydrogen peroxide) Active site- where the enzyme and substrate fit together Enzyme- provides a place for the chemical reaction and therefore lowers the activation energy (Ex. Catalase) Enzyme-Substrate Complex *Enzyme can be reused!! Because it does not change
