SB1b. Explain how enzymes function as catalysts.
2
ENZYME FOLDABLE Label top left: Step 1, top right: Step 2, bottom right: Step 3, bottom left: Step 4 Label active site, enzyme, enzyme substrate complex, product, & substrates 2 3 1 4
3
Tab 1: Key Vocab Enzyme – protein that catalyzes chemical reactions for organisms. Substrate – reactant in a chemical reaction upon which an enzyme acts. Active site – where the enzyme binds.
4
Tab 2 – Reactions Write the reaction: A + B C + D
Label the reactants & products Underneath write: Endothermic – absorbs heat Exothermic – releases heat
5
Tab 3: Factors that Affect Enzymes
Temperature (can denature) pH (can denature) Concentration of substrate
6
Tab 4: Examples of biological enzymes
Insulin – used for diabetics Pepsin Lipase Many, many more
7
Center Fold Enzyme are NOT used up and are reuseable.
Enzymes are VERY specific they will ONLY work with the right substrate. Enzyme break chemical bonds. Enzymes lower activation energy- or energy needed to start a reaction.
8
Back Draw a reaction graph like the one below
Label where the reactants, products, & activation energy is on the graph. Add a dotted line to represent the change that occurs with the addition of an enzyme.
