What economic situations exist in the world today? Notes #51

Today, global interdependence exists because nations of the world are economically dependent on each other for resources.

Economic unions of the world include: European Union (EU)
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) EU NAFTA OPEC

The goals of the EU and NAFTA are to improve the economic prosperity of their respective regions and increase economic cooperation among member nations.

The goal of OPEC is to determine the supply of oil on the world market.

Most nations of the world have a trade imbalance in which the number of their exports and imports differ.

Some nations of the world (such as Germany or Japan) have a favorable balance of trade in which they export more than they import.

Meanwhile, many nations in Africa, Asia, and South America are heavily dependent on other nations because they only produce single cash crops.

What issues of concern exist in the world today? Notes #52

Through the use of modern technology, the world has experienced a Green Revolution in which agricultural output has increased.

However, modern technology has also resulted in levels of air and water pollution increasing, deforestation, and desertification.

New medicines and technology have allowed the world’s population to grow by about 4 billion people since 1950.

However, many nations of the world experience health issues such as HIV/AIDS, poverty, and starvation.

The proliferation of nuclear weapons is always a threat to destroy the world.

The denial of equal rights for women and the exploitation of child labor continues to be a concern in many nations around the world.

These human rights violations most often occur in developing nations or in nations in which leaders have absolute control.
