Pluralistic –When people share common cultural elements while also maintaining many of the traditional ways of their ancestors American society is considered pluralistic in nature Cultural differences can be seen in the way Americans worship, music they listen to and play, languages they speak, and the food they eat

Religion is an important part of culture for many groups of people Religious beliefs affect the way people think about themselves and others About 84% of Americans are Christians Christians include Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans Quakers, Episcopalians, and Roman Catholics Not all Americans are Christians Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, and other religious groups are Included in American culture

Music in the United States is also as varied as its people Western music is the most popular in the U.S. Two major forms of Western Music: classical and popular Classical music includes symphonies, operas, and ballets Popular music includes country, folk, and rock music Jazz music is sometimes called the first original American art form Jazz developed in the South in the early 1900s and drew its inspiration from African American religious and work songs Western – refers to the heritage of people of European descent

The United States does not have an official language, but English has always been the country’s chief language This is due to the English colonists and their British heritage In certain places in the U.S. signs and documents are written in both English and Spanish

Americans eat a wide variety of foods Some regions of the U.S. had special types of food that are distinctive to that area The South is known for its chicken and grits People of German descent like sauerkraut and pork Louisianans’ love to eat seafood such as crawfish In Hawaii people eat a lot of rice, fish and fruits

Americans Unite to celebrate the holidays, such as Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Memorial Day These holidays help Americans remember our history and where our country has come from, both good and bad Some holidays help us remember certain important people throughout our history, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. day and President’s Day September 11th is also a day that Americans remember because it is when a terrorist attack destroyed the World Trade Center and killed many innocent American citizens
