Figure 1 Potential Role of Mycobacterial Lonely Guy in NO Resistance and Pathogenesis The mycobacterial protein Log is normally degraded by the mycobacterial proteasome and kept at very low levels. In the absence of the proteasome, Log accumulates and produces excess cytokinins and their breakdown products, such as para-hydroxybenzaldehyde (pHBA), and these work in concert with NO to cause mycobacterial cell death (expanded inset). The physiological role of Log is not known. It may serve in inter-bacterial communication (1), differentiation or apoptosis of the host cell (2), or modulation of the host immune response by other, as yet unknown, mechanisms (3).
