1 Welcome to 3rd Grade

2 Where the rubber meets the road!

3 Planners Students are expected to fill out their planner every morning from the board. Topics covered are written down, along with homework. Homework is circled with a next to it. Parents – please sign their planner nightly. Hw

4 Reader’s Workshop Reader’s Workshop is broken into two sections. There is the reading Lesson and Daily 5 time. Reading Lesson - During this time, students will be taught skills that will help them become better readers and be given the opportunity to “try out” these skills. Daily 5 – During this time, I will work with groups of students to work on what they need to become better readers. We call it WIN Time (What I Need). As I work with students, the other students will be working on other various reading skills, such as reading their “Just Right” books to improve stamina and reading comprehension or working on writing, since reading and writing are connected. This is also a time that they could be working on their Quick Jots.

5 Daily Reading The more practice a student gets reading, the better they are at reading, and the more experiences they have reading. Your child will have a Daily Reading Goal (DRG) based on the length of his/her book. Students will be expected to meet their reading goal each day. Independent reading that is not finished during the school day will be homework. Students will be using sticky notes to record "Quick Jots“ during their reading.

6 Math Math will also be broken down into two parts – the Math Lesson and BUILD Time. Math Lesson - During this time, students will be taught skills that will help them become better at math and be given the opportunity to “try out” these skills. We will focus a lot on mental math skills this year, especially their math facts. Research shows students learn best using hands-on activities and relating learning to the real world. Students will be given many opportunities to use manipulatives for learning math. BUILD Time - Daily 5 – During this time, I will work with groups of students to work on what they need to become better at math. We call it WIN Time (What I Need). As I work with students, the other students will be working on other various math skills, such as playing math games with previously taught skills, working with manipulatives, or working independently on math skills.

7 Spelling Our Spelling is on a 2 Week Cycle. Research has shown that children only truly learn the spelling patterns if they are exposed to the rules multiple times over a period of time. Week 1 – Word Work/Spelling pattern – Students will explore with the spelling pattern building, sorting, and creating words that follow the spelling pattern. Week 2 – Spelling Week – Students will take a pretest to determine what list they will work on. Students will use all 20 words (pattern words and high frequency words) to complete activities. Test on Friday for the spelling of all 20 words.

8 The Breakdown: Language Arts: Spelling = 15% Grammar = 25%
Writing = 60% Reading/Math/Science/Social Studies: Formative= 50% (Daily Work & Homework) Summative= 50% (Quizzes, Tests, and Projects)

9 Science Science is one of the major focuses for the district. SCUCISD feels students should be familiar with how the world around them works. We will cover concepts in each discipline of science – life, physical, and Earth. Students will be given many opportunities to experiment using hands-on activities.

10 Social Studies Third grade social studies TEKS cover communities.
We will focus on community developments: government, social services (hospitals, libraries, schools, etc.), and businesses.

11 Report Card and Progress Report:
Progress reports will be available on TxConnect every 3 weeks. Report Cards will be available through TxConnect every 9 weeks.. Grades can be viewed online at any time. We encourage you to set up triggers in TxConnect and view your child’s grades weekly. TxConnect has a quick link on the SCUCISD web page. It is the same site you registered your child for school.

12 Corrections All students may correct summative assignments (tests/quizzes). The original grade and correction grade will be averaged and recorded in TxConnect. They are expected to correct only the questions they missed by rewriting the question and their answer on a new piece of paper to be stapled to the original. Corrections should then be turned into the content teacher in a timely manner. We can only accept corrections during the 9 week grading period the assignment was assigned in. Erasing and re-writing makes it very hard to see the correction.

13 Class Dojo 3rd Grade uses Class Dojo for classroom management and behavior. Students can earn Dojo points for following procedures and completing their work. They may also lose Dojo points for not following procedures and not completing their work. Dojo celebrations are usually scheduled once a month. Quiet hours for dojo start at 5pm.

14 Late Work/Absent Work:
Late work –10 points a day Any late work received after 5 days will result in a maximum grade of 70%. Make-up work (1 day for every day absent) **Per district policy

15 Birthday Snacks: Treats must be store bought cupcakes or donuts. Water may be provided also. Please let me know 24 hours in advance if you plan to send in a birthday treat, so we can inform you of allergies. Any leftovers will NOT be sent home with your child per campus policy.
