IB Geography lesson aim(s)
- To understand and evaluate the KOF index as a measure of globalisation. -To consider how this may be represented spatially. IB Geography lesson aim(s)
3
KOF index Indicators / indices e.g.: measuring development.
2 indicators used to measure globalisation AT Kearney index KOF index “Konjunktur-Forschungsstelle” (Swiss Institute for Business Cycle Research) Developed at Zurich Institute of Technology, Switz. First developed in 2002, using 122 countries Max score 100 = most globalised
4
KOF index Human Development Index = compound index
Which data is used to calculate HDI? .
5
KOF index Globalization - definition
“The growing interdependence of countries worldwide through the increasing volume and variety of cross-border transactions in goods and services and of international capital flows, and through the more rapid and widespread diffusion of technology.” DISCUSS: What data could be collected to measure globalisation, according to this definition? Textbook p.11
6
KOF index Textbookp.8-9; data sheets – Think, discuss, makes notes:
Does the top ten most globalized countries (according to KOF) surprise you? Are there any countries that you thought would be there but aren’t? Where do the “IB Top10” countries rank? Make a sketch showing changes in China's KOF Index from Briefly describe the global trends of globalisation from Can you think of any limitations of the KOF index? e.g.: which data sets do you think are weak, and why?
7
KOF index Peer Assessment:
Q: Explain how global interactions may be measured. (10marks) Read the 3 sample answers. Also study the mark scheme. What level is each answer? How many marks has it earned? 15mins
8
KOF index Limitations of the KOF index
How regularly is data collected / updated? In calculating the index, economic factors = 38%, political factors = 23%, social factors = 39% but why not 33% each? Does this uneven weighting make some countries appear more globalised than others? (e.g.: USA #38, below Hungary #10???) Does owning a TV really make a household more globalised? Many people around the world have access to a TV, even in the least globalised countries – but this doesn’t make them any closer to the rest of the world in any other data set. Is a country that frequently volunteers troops for UN missions more globalised, or are its reasons for doing so more complex? Globalisation is a complex process, and doesn’t mean the same to everyone.
