1 INFORMATION LITERACY AND NNRA LIBRARY by Nkiru Opara Jarlath

2 Outline Objective Introduction The conceptual clarification
Information Literacy Defined An Information Literacy Person The Necessity of IL Evaluation of Information NNRA and IL

3 Master content and extend investigation,
Objective This is to enable us; Master content and extend investigation, Become more self-directed, and Assume greater control over search for information.

4 Quote It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change Charles Darwin

5 Introduction CONSTANT CHANGE Information explosion
Scientific developments Globalisation CONSTANT CHANGE Information dependency Technological developments

6 Introduction cont’d Because of the escalating complexity of this environment, individuals are faced with diverse, abundant information choices in their academic studies, in the workplace, and in their personal lives. Information is available through libraries, community resources, special interest organizations, media, and the Internet and they come to individuals in unfiltered formats, raising questions about its authenticity, validity, and reliability. Thereby pose challenges for individuals in evaluating and understanding it. The sheer abundance of information will not in itself create a more informed citizenry without a complementary cluster of abilities necessary to use information effectively.

7 Information Literacy (Conceptual Clarification)
The Authority as part of its power provides training, information, and guidance on nuclear safety and radiation protection. Information is data transformed into →knowledge → knowledge drives and underpins behavior and decision making. There are two types of knowledge Tacit and explicit knowledge Tacit knowledge is personal and undocumented. Explicit knowledge is documented and can easily be communicated.

8 Information Literacy (Conceptual Clarification) cont’d
Explicit knowledge, such as recorded information in publications, documents, technical reports, etc. Explicit knowledge which need stages of knowledge processing cycle, such as; Extracting knowledge from documents Writing up and editing raw knowledge. Organizing the processed knowledge, and Disseminating knowledge. Library- Literacy-

9 Information Literacy defined
The ability to recognize when information is needed, access, evaluate and use information from a variety of sources. It may be book based or electronic, in the library or cyberspace; tacit or explicit, manual or automated and communicate it in an ethical manner. To achieve a personal, social, occupational and educational goals.

10 Information literacy person
Determines the extent of information needed. Access the needed information effectively and efficiently. Evaluate information and its sources critically. Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base. Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.

11 The Necessity of IL Today IL is required by organizations, expected by employers in the workplace for organizational success, and so many organizations, need an informed citizenry that is capable of making well-reasoned and well-founded decisions. Content mastered by graduation is soon outdated or forgotten by students. Learning can continue beyond formal education by the use of IL skills. Enables preservation and dissemination of information.

12 The Necessity of IL cont’d
Technical Document (TECDOC 1510), Ageing workforce, Transfer of workers, Loss of workers, so it becomes necessary for IL to know the information need of staff, and document because it is only documented knowledge that allows the transfer especially if the predecessor is not available anymore.

13 the existing knowledge
The Necessity of IL for updating the existing knowledge for new skills Need for life long learning

14 How to evaluate information
Suitability of sources Scope What is breadth of article, book, website? Does it treat topic generally or in a specific way? Is the time covered relevant to my research? Audience Who is the intended audience? How technical is the material? Timeliness What was date of publication? When last was the website updated

15 How to evaluate information cont’d
Authority Author Academic credentials Any previous work Documentation List of references, websites Indicates degree of consultation of other sources Acknowledgment of sources indicates respect for other authors Objectivity Is it personal, group, or organizational opinion Is the publication medium biased?

16 NNRA Library and Information Literacy (IL)
We have the ability to access, evaluate and use information from a variety of sources. That source may be internal, transactional or contextual. It may be book based or electronic, in the library; tacit or explicit, manual or automated.

17 NNRA Library and IL principle
We understand these principles; Understand the information need environment Empowering decision making accuracy Critical/Inquiring Skills. Diversity of Information Sources.

18 NNRA Library and IL cont’d
how we find,analyze and use information depends on; How we learn, Available resources, The task in our hands, and What we may already know about the topic. These processes of information seeking is considered;

19 NNRA Library and IL Books on nuclear applications
So, the library resources can be accessed following this; Category of resources Books on nuclear applications Books on health and medicine Books on radioactive waste management Books on emergency preparedness and response International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP).

20 NNRA and IL IAEA Safety Standards Series Safety Report Series
General Safety (GS) Nuclear Safety (NS) Radiation Safety (RS) Transport Safety (TS) Waste Safety (WS) Safety Report Series The International Safety Advisory Group Technical report and TECDOC. IAEA Nuclear Security Series IAEA Nuclear Energy Series

21 NNRA and IL IAEA safety standard series are standards of safety for protection of health, Life,…. Coded according their coverage; GS, NS,RS,TS and WS The categorizes within it are; safety fundamental-basic objectives, concepts, and principles of safety and protection in the development and application of NE. safety requirements-requirements that must be met to ensure safety. safety guides-recommend actions, conditions for meeting safety requirements.

22 NNRA and IL Safety report series that describe good practices, give practical examples and detailed methods to meet safety requirements …. Others are; INSAG-The International Nuclear Safety Group’s Technical reports and TECDOCs

23 NNRA and IL IAEA Nuclear Security Series relating to the prevention and detection of, and response to, theft, ….involving nuclear material. Publication categories are; Nuclear security fundamentals- Recommendations- provides best practices to be adopted by member states in the application of the NSF. Implementing guides- Provide further elaboration of the recommendations in broad areas and suggest measures for implementation Technical guidance which comprise; reference manuals-detailed measures on how to apply the implementing guides in specific fields or activities. training guides- syllabus and manuals for IAEA training courses in NS services guides- guidance on the conduct and scope of IAEA nuclear security advisory missions.

24 NNRA and IL IAEA Nuclear Energy Series provide information in the areas of nuclear power, fuel cycle, radioactive waste management and decommissioning. This series comprises 3 levels; NE basic principle-rationale and vision for the peaceful uses of NE. NES objectives-expectations to be met in various areas at different stages of implementation. NES guides- on how to achieve the objectives related to the various topics involving peaceful uses of NE. NE technical reports-additional more detailed information on activities related to IAEA NES. Publication code are; NG-General, NP-Nuclear power, NF-nuclear fuel, NW-radioactive waste and decommissioning.

25 NNRA and IL E-resources These are subscribed networks;
HINARI-Health Internetwork Access to Research Initiative. OARE-Online Access Research in the Environment. PRIS-Power Reactor Information System. ENTRAC-Electronic Nuclear Training Catalogue. INIS-International Nuclear Information System. INLN-International Nuclear Library Network.
