1 Paper Disk Sculptures The element of art this project is going to focus on is... (next slide)

2 Repetition Unity Now, what were some of the elements and principles we talked about in the first sculpture powerpoint we looked at? Balance Scale We've also discussed line when we were in our drawing unit.

3 Repetition refers to the use of the same elements and principles throughout an art piece to achieve two other elements: balance and unity. (Read slide) So, with your neighbors, I would like you to: 1. paraphrase this definition of repetition in your own words. 2. agree on a definition of what unity might refer to. Everyone should have an answer ready, because I'm going to call on you. Write down what you are going to say in your sketchbooks. (Give them a few seconds) Call on people. *If “I don't know,” say “can one of your neighbors come to the assist?”

4 Students provide definition of “unity.”
Call on someone: “Using (name)'s definition of unity, which one of these seems to be the best example of unity?”

5 “Unity” interchangeable with “harmony.”
Both refer to the arrangement of elements to give the viewer the feeling that all the parts of a piece form a coherent whole. I'll give you time to write this definition down if yours didn't quite have the same meaning.

6 Focusing on repetition and unity, we are going to be cutting repeated shapes out of chipboard, decorating them, and then cutting slots into them so that they can be assembled into a 3D sculpture. The extra cool thing about this project is that you can disassemble it and re-assemble it to form a completely different shape, which, incidentally, is going to be part of the assignment (next slide)

7 Project Tasks: Build your disks
At least 12 All same shape, same size All decorated similarly When finished, 3 different assemblies of pieces All must be noticeably different from each other Take a picture of each assembly all 3 pictures to Ms. Squires For ing: Take the pictures here or at home Don't need to send them right away—if you can't them to me from your phone, you can send them to me from home. Doesn't need to be right away. I can also take the pictures if that's easier. We can figure all of this out next week when the time comes—for now, let's go over project requirements so people with wire stuff to do can get back to work: (next slide)

8 Disk Sculpture Requirements
At least 12 identically shaped pieces IDENTICALLY SHAPED PIECES 2-4 inches All pieces decorated in a way that shows unity (similar pattern, same colors throughout, etc.) All pieces decorated front and back (still showing unity) At least 2 colors per side, per disk Craftsmanship Clean cutting/gluing Even/consistent disks and slots Decoration example: Same design, different colors Same design, same colors Color reversal on disks (demo on whiteboard)

9 Today Deciding on your shape (consider what you have to do with it...choose wisely) Make a stencil Start tracing and cutting (all 12+ from one piece of chipboard) Start decorating (if you have time) *No slots yet!*
