1 Building STI Capacity: A Designer’s Perspective 13 February, 2007
Amy Smith Senior Lecturer, MIT Good morning, it’s a pleasure to be here. I’m Amy Smith, and I’m an instructor at MIT, where I teach classes about technologies for international development, in a program called D-Lab. The D stands for many things, development, design, dialogue dissemination, and I think it’s very important to note that the technologies can’t be isolated from these other things I’d like to start by talking about two extremely simple technologies. One is based on this, the other on this… And between them, they have the potential of saving literally millions of lives every year. I think that one of the things that is hard for many Americans is to truly understand the context in which more than half the world’s population lives. And so when we shape policy, we have to be cognizant of this context, and create an environment where we are aware of who the real beneficiaries are. So I’ll start with the context for
