1 WHAT IS THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE CHURCH (2)

2 The Biblical role of women is greatly challenged today
It is imperative that we understand and respect what God’s word says about this subject and any other if we are to please Him and have hope beyond this life.

3 In our last lesson we addressed:
Our need our need to obey God rather than men Our need to be open minded in our studies That this is not a question of worth The Biblical role of men and women Biblical submission Leadership roles in the church

4 1 Corinthians 11:3 In this lesson, we want to address 1 Timothy 2:11-14 and 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 as they address the role of women in the church and teaching

5 1 Timothy 2:11-14 Paul addressing women understanding submission and proper conduct dealing with studying God’s word. Paul clarifies God’s boundaries and explains why

6 1 Timothy 2:11-14 Learn in silence Absolute silence or an attitude of quietness ἡσυχία, (hēsychia) Acts 22:2, 2 Thessalonians 3:12 Our text (2x)

7 1 Timothy 2:11-14 Learn in silence The root word (ησυχιος, ēsychios) is found 11 times Luke 14:4, 23:56 Acts 11:18 1 Peter 3:4, a gentle and quiet spirit

8 1 Timothy 2:11-14 Learn in silence Silence is a respectful manner and attitude that might involve saying nothing or yielding (as opposed to boisterous and loud)

9 1 Timothy 2:11-14 With all submission – in whatever circumstance, we must all accept the place God has given us

10 1 Timothy 2:11-14 She is not to teach or have authority over a man
“And”, “But” (KJV, NASB) – a conjunction that expresses either contrast or simple continuation- this qualifies the previous phrase

11 1 Timothy 2:11-14 She is not to teach or have authority over a man
Not ALL teaching situations Titus 2:3-4 2 Timothy 1:5, 3:15 Colossians 3:16 Acts 18:26, where Priscilla helped her husband Aquila teach Apollos Acts 21:9, 1 Cor. 11:5, 10

12 1 Timothy 2:11-14 She is not to teach or have authority over a man Not ALL times of authority Ephesians 6:1-2 Titus 2:4 The limitation is addressing “authority over a man”

13 1 Timothy 2:11-14 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love and holiness, with self-control. Speaks of woman, as with ALL, recognizing their role and fulfilling that with godliness

14 1 Timothy 2:11-14 WHERE does this text apply?
Not just in the assembly – the context (1 Tim. 2:1-15) addresses conduct to be had at all times Includes personal studies (home, visiting), Bible classes, etc.

15 We find no usurping of authority in these (or other) passages
1 Timothy 2:11-14 WHERE does this text apply? Examples of women interacting with men in spiritual matters John 4:28-30, Luke 2:36-38 John 11:20-27 Matthew 28:7-8 Acts 18:26, 21: Corinthians 14:35 We find no usurping of authority in these (or other) passages

16 Our text is included in this application
1 Corinthians 14:34-35 1 Corinthians 14 addresses maintaining proper order when we assemble as the church and worship God Our text is included in this application

17 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 Let your women keep silent in the churches Silent, σιγάω, (sigaō) is a word that means to hold one’s tongue Luke 9:36 Acts 15:12-13 Romans 16:25 1 Corinthians 14:28, 30, 34 “In the churches” Thus not always total silence, but saying nothing in a particular circumstance – in this case, leading the assembly

18 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 They are not permitted to speak, but to be submissive, as the law says Speak, can mean to utter a sound or communicate. In 1 Corinthians 14, used 30+ times and always addresses speaking up in the assembly BEFORE the congregation (teaching capacity)

19 Paul is addressing ORDER in the assemblies for worship!
1 Corinthians 14:34-35 They are not permitted to speak, but to be submissive, as the law says Thus, silence is not necessarily total silence – cf. Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16, Matthew 10:32-33, 1 Timothy 6:12-13 James 5:16, etc. Paul is addressing ORDER in the assemblies for worship!

20 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 If they want to learn, let them ask their husbands at home In the addressed assembly, women are not even to ask questions (don’t interrupt, etc.) NOTE: Context indicates NONE should interrupt others

21 It is shameful for women to speak in church
1 Corinthians 14:34-35 It is shameful for women to speak in church When ANYONE oversteps their boundaries, it is shameful!

22 May we resolve in all that we do to follow His will! Colossians 3:17
