Motion Physics Part 1
2
Motion An object is in motion if its distance from another object is changing. A reference point is a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. **An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point**
3
SPEED Formula: Speed = distance divided by time
(units are typically km/hr or m/s but sometimes you will see cm/s) Average speed: speed is not always constant so we may want to determine the average speed and to do this the formula we use is the total distance divided by the total time Instantaneous speed: the rate at which an object is moving at a given instance in time
4
Speed Triangle D T S x ÷ Velocity: speed in a given direction.
The speed triangle can be used to help you remember the formula for speed and to help manipulate the formula in order to find either distance or time. S = speed D = distance T = time S = D/T D = S x T T = D/S Velocity: speed in a given direction. Example: 50 km/hr northwest
5
*the steeper the slope, the greater the speed*
Distance vs. time graphs: used to analyze motion Rise: vertical difference between two points Run: horizontal difference between two points Slope: the steepness of a line on a graph Slope = rise/run *the steeper the slope, the greater the speed*
6
Acceleration = ___velocity__
Acceleration is the rate at which an object changes its velocity In science, acceleration refers to increasing speed or decreasing speed Formula for acceleration: velocity divided by time Acceleration = ___velocity__ time Units for acceleration: m/s/s or m/s2
