Goal-Directed Persistence
Setting a goal and working towards it Perseverance Grit! uwB8 Our school has a learning goal for its students. This goal is that students will work through hard problems until they reach a solution, rather than just giving up half-way through. This is so important because research has shown that one of the most important determining factors for success is perseverance or grit– not giving up, being determined, and pushing through to finish work/reach goals. Watch the video and discuss any surprising things/ah ha’s.

Ask students to gauge themselves on the Effort Meter for recent accomplishments- SAGE testing, completing an essay in English, reaching a long-term goal like getting good grades, etc. Reminder students that effort really matters. If they feel like “Everything is easy” now, they should get into the habit of putting in effort anyway. Then, they will know HOW to work hard when they HAVE TO work hard to succeed– like in college, a future job, raising kids one day, etc.
