Characteristics of Waves
2
Period Frequency Frequency-period Wave Speed
3
Period The time required for one full wavelength of a wave to pass a certain point. Represented as T and expressed in seconds.
4
Frequency The number of wavelengths that pass a point in a given time interval. Represented as f and expressed in Hertz (Hz)
5
Frequency to period The more vibrations in a second, the less time each takes therefore:
6
Wave Speed The speed of a wave is equal to wavelength divided by period or to frequency multiplied by wavelength
7
SPEED OF LIGHT m/s SPEED OF SOUND m/s

A tuning fork has a frequency of 280 Hz, and the wavelength of sound produced is 1.5 meters. What is the velocity of the wave? 𝑣=𝑓𝜆 𝑣=280 𝐻𝑧 𝑥 1.5 𝑚 420 m/s

2.0 m 𝑣=𝑓𝜆 (5.0 m/s) =(2.5 𝐻𝑧) 𝜆 𝜆 = 5.0𝑚/𝑠 2.5𝐻𝑧
A wave is moving toward shore with a velocity of 5.0 m/s. If its frequency is 2.5 Hz, what is its wavelength? 𝑣=𝑓𝜆 (5.0 m/s) =(2.5 𝐻𝑧) 𝜆 𝜆 = 5.0𝑚/𝑠 2.5𝐻𝑧 2.0 m
