Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Chapter 6 Section 6.2
2
Objective Students will add and subtract algebraic fractions
3
Concept Addition Rule for Fractions a + b = a + b c c c
4
Concept Subtraction Rule for Fractions a – b = a – b c c c
5
Concept To add or subtract fractions with the same denominator, you add or subtract their numerators and write the result over the common denominator.
6
Reminder Must follow rules for subtraction when there is more than one term to subtract **add the opposite of everything sign behind the subtraction sign**
7
Example 3c + 5c 16 16
8
Example 5x + 4 – 3x –
9
Example 3 + 1 x + 4 x + 4
10
Example x – – x
11
Concept When adding and subtracting fraction you must have a common denominator before you can combine the numerators together. The following steps will help you in adding and subtracting fractions that do not start with a common denominator.
12
Steps Find a common denominator Adjust top to match new denominator
Factor denominator completely, write integral factors as a product of primes Adjust top to match new denominator Add or Subtract numerators Keep over common denominator Reduce (put in simplest form)
