Teacher who roamed marketplace asking questions to citizens Helped seek truth and self-knowledge He threatened tradition, and at age 70 was put on trial for “corrupting the youth” Sentenced to death; he accepted the decision because it was democratic.

Distrusted democracy because of Socrates’ execution. Set up a school: The Academy Wrote “The Republic”: describes ideal gov’t. Reason is the path to knowledge. The state should regulate every aspect of citizens’ lives.

Thought gov’t should be run by the middle class. Democracy is too “messy”- can lead to mob rule. Wrote “Politics”: The rule of law is supreme- even rulers must obey. Set up a school: The Lyceum. Taught biology, ethics, math, literature, logic.
