Day 6 1-14-11 Topic: Conservation of Momentum
Objective: I will solve and practice Conservation of Momentum problems. Science Starter: Sample EOC Problem
2
Ben bought 8 notebooks for $24. 50. Some of the notebooks were $2
Ben bought 8 notebooks for $ Some of the notebooks were $2.50 each, and the others were $3.25 each. If x represents the number of least expensive notebooks, which equation can be used to find the number of least expensive notebooks purchased? Write a word equation representing the total cost of the notebooks.
3
In words… Total cost = (#of least expensive) cost of least expensive + (# of most expensive) cost of most expensive

Momentum (review) Momentum can be thought of as “mass in motion”.
Momentum is mass x velocity (p=mv) Momentum is a vector- direction is important. Try--What is the momentum of 0.5 kg ball rolling with a speed of 5 m/s?
5
Law of Conservation of Momentum
The total momentum of a system before a collision is equal to the total momentum after a collision. Inelastic collision: after a collision the objects stick together (total kinetic energy decreases). Objects often change shape. Elastic collision: objects bounce off each other with no change in shape (total energy is conserved).

Identify the Elastic and Inelastic Collision
