Unit 2 Day 1 Factoring Review
2
Warm Up 1. Write an equivalent expression for each of the problems:
(x + 2)(x + 4) (x – 5)(x + 8) (x – 9)2 (x + 10)2 (x – 8)(x + 8) 2. Using the equation expression x – 16x2: a. Explain what each part of the equation represents. b. Write a story that relates to the function. c. What is the maximum? When does it occur? What does this mean in the context of your story? d. Solve for the zeros of the expression and explain what they mean in the context of your story.

Warm Up x2 + 6x + 8 x2 + 3x – 40 x2 – 18x + 81 x2 + 20x + 100 x2 - 64

Notes p. 4: Summary: Factoring Polynomials
- ALWAYS factor out the greatest common factor (GCF) FIRST!! - A polynomial that can not be factored is prime. - A polynomial is considered to be completely factored when it is expressed as the product of prime polynomials.
7
A. Factoring out the GCF a. b.
8
B. Factor by grouping—for polynomials with 4 or more terms
9
C. Factoring trinomials into the product of two binomials
a. When leading coefficient is one. i. ii.
10
D. Difference of “Two Squares”
i. ii. Do if time permits…if not, do on Day 2.
11
Practice Factoring Notes p.5
If there is still time have the class start on the Day 3 homework.

Return Tests Test Policy
If you received a 70% or lower you are required to come to tutorials to complete test corrections. Once completed I will check them off. The test corrections will count as a single homework grade. There are no test retakes. There will be an ODM at the end of each quarter that will replace your lowest test grade if you do well on it.
