March 2017

2 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Citations – when to accept/modify/create Using the index of names Risk of relying on other users Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

3 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Citations are a critical but typically overlooked part of your family history research A citation provides the details of a source you use to confirm a fact A citation allows others to: see how you came to your conclusion, and duplicate your research weigh the strength or weakness of your source Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

4 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Facts: you can add as many as you want from an extensive list Sources: you can accept hints or research suggestions provided or create your own and then link them to a specific fact Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

5 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Example: Residence Fact – residing in Hyde Park, New York in 1920 and linked to that is the source, the 1920 US Census record Click VIEW to see the source details Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

6 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Click CITATION DETAILS to see the source of the image Click VIEW IMAGE to see the actual image of the record Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

7 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
The citation should be detailed enough for someone to find the information again on their own Could you do so with what is given? Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

8 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Following the source detail would get you this: Consider adding the line number Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

9 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Another example: Marriage fact – married January 31, 1923 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

10 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Will this citation allow you to locate the marriage record? No way! Click EDIT CITATION Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

11 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Add the details as required: Entry for Maurice F. Neil, 31 January 1923, Kings County, New York, certificate number 1492. Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

12 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Now do the details allow someone to retrace your steps? Yup! Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

13 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
What if you don’t have an Ancestry supplied hint to use as a source? You will need to add your own source Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

14 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Using the information I learned from the marriage index I ordered a copy of the marriage certificate I scanned and uploaded it to Ancestry and attached it to the marriage fact An aside…be cautious with details on documents ‘Minerva’ is actually Wilhelmina She had no middle name She was 26 Born in Long Island City, not what this says This was not her first marriage Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

15 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Clicking Add Source brings you to this screen First step is to check to see if you have one already or create a new source if there isn’t one you need Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

16 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Once the source itself is created you add the citation Certificate of Marriage, Maurice F. Neil to Minerva E. Clarke, 31 January 1923, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. Municipal Archives, New York City Department of Records. Copy in possession of Garth Fitzner. Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

17 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
The source is now shown under Other Sources… and looks like this Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

18 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Caution…the citation just created is only attached to the individual person’s profile page It is not available from a list of citations for use elsewhere The source is available, just not the citation This marriage citation must now be duplicated on Minnie’s profile page Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

19 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
We have now researched and found a significant source document and properly cited it What now? You can keep information to yourself or you can make the information available to other researchers I suggest the latter! Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

20 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Note the FamilySearch icon at the top of an individual’s profile page Only LDS members see this If you are LDS and do not yet have a free Ancestry account go to familysearch.org/partneraccess Legend: your Ancestry account is not signed in to FamilySearch your Ancestry account is signed in to FamilySearch the individual is linked to the FamilySearch record and at least one ordinance is available the individual is linked to the FamilySearch record and ordinances are complete the individual is linked to the FamilySearch record and more information is needed for ordinances Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

21 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Link an individual to their FamilySearch record by clicking the icon (signing in first if needed) Select from the list of names or enter the ID number Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

22 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Once you pick one of the names, their details are shown to compare with the Ancestry record details Click CONNECT PERSON if the details match Click ADD TO FAMILY SEARCH if needed Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

23 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Once the link is established click the icon and select View this person on FamilySearch Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

24 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Note that a new FamilySearch tab has appeared Click the icon again and select Compare person on FamilySearch Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

25 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
You can now compare your Ancestry record details with the details that FamilySearch has Use your power wisely and with caution! Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

26 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
I’ve scrolled down on the screen and the marriage certificate citation is shown Selecting a detail copies it to the FamilySearch side Scroll back to the top and click SAVE CHANGES Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

27 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Here are the Sources on Maurice’s FamilySearch record before I added this new one The new source is added to the top of the list Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

28 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Optional: help keep things neat and clear; consider putting the sources into chronological order 1923 marriage so I’ve moved the source accordingly Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

29 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Let’s move on by looking at someone new Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

30 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
As before, we’ll look at a Fact (1940 Residence) which is linked to a Source (Canada Voters Lists) Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

31 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Drilling down we can view the original image… And there she is – Mrs G Fitzner… Along with her husband Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

32 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
When I originally found Florentina and attached this source and fact to her profile my next step was to add the same things to her husband Gottlieb’s profile The first step…do a search on Ancestry and let the automated processes do their thing Nothing! No matter how I searched and looked and tweaked the algorithms I was NEVER able to obtain a search result that showed Gottlieb in the 1940 Canada Voters List If I didn’t already know that he was there I would have come to the conclusion that he wasn’t Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

33 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
Suitably frustrated I decided to do it a different way Going back to the record image we originally found there are two icons at the bottom Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

34 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
The left one is the Filmstrip icon It allows you to see the individual image and where it fits within the series Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

35 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
The right one is the Index icon It allows you to see the all of the names that were indexed from a particular image Mrs G Fitzner is on the list Note that her husband’s name is not on the list Also note that her name and location name are in brackets Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com

36 Intermediate/Advanced Navigation
The information, as it was originally indexed, is shown when you click on View source Mrs Q Fltzner and Yorkton, Saskatchewan Click View Record Click View/Add alternate info Click Submit Alternate Intermediate/Advanced Navigation ©familyfinderservice.com
