1 Empowering Classroom Teachers with Universal Design for Learning and
Differentiated Instruction

2 Objective: Explore ways to infuse UDL Principles into instruction in order to ensure access to instruction.

3 3 Networks = 3 UDL Principles
UDL tip: This graphic offers information in text, visuals, & color. 3 Networks = 3 UDL Principles Neuroscience shows us that there are three networks in the brain that are associated with learning. The 3 Principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) address these 3 brain networks in this way: - Recognition Networks – the “what” of learning; associated UDL principle is the Principle of Representation = we need to provide “Multiple Means of Representation;” - Strategic Networks – the “how” of learning; associated UDL principle is the Principle of Action and Expression = we need to provide “Multiple Means of Action & Expression;” - Affective Networks – the “why” of learning; associated UDL principle is the Principle of Engagement = we need to provide “Multiple Means of Engagement.”

4 UDL tip: This video offers information in another medium.
This video explains UDL and is available on the National Center on UDL. CST, March 2012

5 Take a virtual tour of the classroom to see every day examples of UDL Principles. To navigate through the classroom, click and drag the mouse to the left or right. Click on hotspots  and magnifying glasses to zoom in on specific examples. NOTE: Some features of the virtual tour are unsupported in Internet Explorer. It is best to use Firefox or Chrome to interact with the virtual tour.

6 Engaging All Learners through UDL

7 Additional Resources to Explore www.cast.org
Book Builder enables educators to develop their own digital books to support reading instruction for children aged 3 and up. Teachers create, edit, and save resource-rich texts. Terry, an animated character, guides educators as they write text, choose images, and develop scripts for the prompts, hints, and models that will help build young readers' skills.

8 This resource is a collaborative effort between Maryland public TV this center for technology in education at Johns Hopkins university. If you are not familiar with this please take time to look at the resources that are available. Interactive media lesson plans student interactive’s and more.

9 This resource is part of Maryland public TV and thinkport. It is a collaborative effort between MPT and verizon. It includes a wide variety of lesson plans, student and teacher resources as well as family resources. The bottom of the screen showcases the content partners. These resources are full of lessons and curriculum materials that are based in universal design for learning.

10 UDL: Facilitating Achievement for ALL
10/26/12 Foldables (Dinah Zike) 3D graphic organizers Color support Reading guides Highlighter tape Now that you have had an opportunity to explore on your own we will now showcase a variety of additional resources. Although UDL has a firm basis in technology we still want to consider a hierarchy of supports. Foldables represent the use of paper folded in a variety of ways to support all manner of content. Dinah Zike has many online and low tech resources to support foldables. You may want to check out her Wiki. Color support: Research indicates that some students are able to read and process information when the background is colored or if a different color font is used. This can be facilitated by changing the color background in Microsoft Word or providing handouts on different colored paper Reading Guides support color highlighting, focus and visual tracking Highlighter tape can also work to support reading with color. If you are not familiar with highlighter tape it is similar to adhesive tape- only it is easily removed.

11 Readability How can you use readability statistics to provide multiple means of representation? Word Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options. Click Proofing. Make sure Check grammar with spelling is selected. Under When correcting grammar in Word, select the Show readability statistics check box.

12 Readability statistics
Provides grade level information on text that is typed or copied and pasted. This example shows a grade level reading assignment.

14 Speech Recognition Windows 7 Ease of Access
Speech Recognition Features of windows seven Ease of access, formerly known as accessibility, is located under accessories. Magnifier: multiple magnifiers available. Split screen, or simple magnifier. Can help students who need enlargement or teachers who want to showcase specific information. Onscreen keyboard: allows access to computer keyboard on the computer screen. Can be accessed via the mouse by clicking on the key were with a touch window. Speech recognition: allows for dictation directly to the computer. The notes for this PowerPoint have been generated using windows seven speech recognition.

21 Universal Design for Learning…
Reduces instructional barriers Provides appropriate accommodations, supports, and challenges Maintains high academic achievement for all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency (source: Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008)

22 Summary UDL is based on what we’ve learned in neuroscience and the learning sciences about HOW we learn. There are 3 brain networks associated with learning: Affective, Recognition, Strategic and 3 UDL Principles offering multiple means of: Engagement, Representation and Action & Expression. There are 3 Guidelines for each UDL Principle = 9 UDL Guidelines moving from access to comprehension and deep engagement. We can plan a UDL Curriculum (Goals, Assessment, Methods, Materials/Media) by asking questions based on the UDL Guidelines.
