MATTER What is Matter?
2
CHEMISTRY What things are made of, what their properties are and how the interact and change
3
MATTER Anything that has mass and occupies space (volume).
4
Matter
5
How is matter built? 1st we start with atoms
Atoms are the smallest unit of an elements that retain the properties of that element
6
Structure of Matter Atoms of the same kind make up elements. Elements can’t be broken down chemically into simpler substances 2 or more elements chemically come together to form compounds.
7
Types of compounds Non-metal + non-metal
When two or more non-metal elements combine to form molecules. Diatomics Diatomic means 2 Some non-metal elements only combine with each other Dr. H. BrONClIF

C6H10N2O2 Chemical Formulas Carbon (C) – 6 Hydrogen (H) – 10
Chemical Formulas show how many elements are in a compound. The letter is the symbol for the atom The subscript shows the number of atoms C6H10N2O2 Carbon (C) – 6 Hydrogen (H) – 10 Nitrogen (N) – 2 Oxygen (O) – 2
9
Mixtures Pure Substances are the same “make-up” throughout the substance. 2 types of pure substances 1) elements 2) compounds Mixtures are made from two or more pure substances. 1) element + element 2) element + compound 3) compounds + compounds
10
Types of Mixtures Heterogenous-different Homogenous-same
Mixtures that you can see differences in substances Sometimes called solutions No “visible” differences in substances.
