1 Biotic factors 10th grade SOL:BIO. 9a

2 Key Concepts Coevolution Predation Mutualism Commensalism Parisitism Herbivory Relationships are key…

3 Coevolution Back-and-forth evolutionary adjustment between two species that interact Example:predator-prey relationship Adaptations are made in response to the other animal

4 Predation What makes them a predator? -killing another for food Characteristics: Usually larger animals but sometimes small Ex: microscopic organisms

5 Predation continued Most animals are both predators & prey Few species are not considered prey Ex.: killer whales

6 Can’t we all just get along? Yes!
Mutualism Can’t we all just get along? Yes! A relationship between two species - both species benefit Ex. Clown fish is protected & attracts food for the sea anemone

7 commensalism Two species relationship: one species benefits and the other is neither harmed nor helped

8 One organism feeds a host Usually larger live on or in their host
Parisitism One organism feeds a host Usually larger live on or in their host Can harm the host Hosts defend by immune systems or behaviors

9 only consume plant material do not necessarily kill plant
Herbivory only consume plant material do not necessarily kill plant Some plants have defense mechanisms that prevent the animal from feeding on them.

10 Summary What could these pictures represent?
