Chinese is a pictograph. Very old characters were like drawings to represent the meaning. Although modern Chinese is much more abstract, some characters are still like pictures, such as 火，水，凹，凸，山，林，etc.
Most very ancient characters were very complicated to write.

4. Ancient Written Language
During thousands of years, Chinese characters kept changing and there were many versions of characters in history.
In ancient time, Chinese people engraved language on bone, bamboo or other hard things with knives, which made it necessary that the written language is very concise. Written language and Speaking language were two separate systems, which was unique in the world.
