3.05 Remember the structures of the Integumentary System
2
Essential Questions What are the structures of the integumentary system? 3.05 Remember the structures of the integumentary system
3
Structures of the integumentary system
Layers of the integumentary system Our LARGEST organ! Epidermis Dermis Subcutaneous About the size of a shower curtain in an adult. 3.05 Remember the structures of the integumentary system
4
Structures of the integumentary system
Epidermis Outermost covering Made of epithelial cells Avascular 3.05 Remember the structures of the integumentary system

Structures of the integumentary system
Epidermis Stratum corneum-the outermost layer of the epidermis; the 1st line of defense against invading bacteria; flakes off due to constant friction of clothing, rubbing. Thickest on the palms and soles of the feet due to constant friction. Stratum germinativum-the deepest layer of the epidermis; constantly reproducing itself in case it is injured; contains melanocytes-melanin gives skin its color. The lower edge of The stratum germinativum is thrown into ridges called papillae-these ridges make the fingerprints. 3.05 Remember the structures of the integumentary system 5

Dermis Second layer of skin True skin Made of connective tissue Vascular 3.05 Remember the structures of the integumentary system
7
Structures of the integumentary system
*Dermis contains many structures (organs) Connective tissue Collagen tissue bands Elastic fibers *Numerous blood vessels *Nerve endings Muscles *Hair follicles *Oil glands (sebaceous glands) *Sweat glands (sudoriferous glands Fat cells subcutaneous
8
Structures of the integumentary system
*Subcutaneous layer *Innermost layer of the skin Hypodermal-lies under the dermis Sometimes called superficial fascia Consists of loose connective tissue Contains one-half of the body’s stored adipose tissue epidermis, dermis subcutaneous
9
Structures of the integumentary system
With age, the subcutaneous layer begins to disappear; this causes the skin to sag and wrinkle. epidermis, dermis subcutaneous 3.05 Remember the structures of the integumentary system
10
Structures of the integumentary system
*Appendages Hair (no hair on palms of hands, soles of feet, glans penis, inner vagina labia) Nails Glands Sweat glands Sebaceous glands epidermis, dermis subcutaneous 3.05 Remember the structures of the integumentary system

Structures of the integumentary system
Hair Cortex and medulla Root and shaft Hair follicle Papilla Arrector pili muscle Beards are the fastest growing hairs. Nearly 30 feet in a lifetime! 3.05 Remember the structures of the integumentary system
12
Structures of the integumentary system
Hair *Cortex-outer part of the hair Medulla-inner part of the hair Root-the part of the hair implanted in the skin Shaft-projects from the skin; what we see Hair follicle-hold the root in the epidermis Papilla-contains capillaries that nourish the follicle Arrector pili muscle-smooth muscle attached to the hair follicle; contracts and the skin puckers around the hair causing “goosebumps” 12

Structures of the integumentary system
*Nails Made of *keratin-makes the nail hard; provides a waterproof covering. Originate from the nail root *Matrix is the nail bed Did you know???? In Egypt, the status of women were established by the color of their nail… red being the highest.
