Classification of Matter
A quick review
2
Matter Anything that has mass and occupies space
3
Matter can be classified 2 ways
Pure Substances Mixtures
4
Pure Substances Contains one type of substance
Has a fixed uniform composition Has the same properties Two types of pure substances Elements Compounds
5
Elements Contain only one type of atom
Can not be readily broken down into simpler substances Atoms have known properties
6
Compounds Two or more elements chemically combined
Can not be separated by a physical process The elements are joined together in a fixed ratio Have know properties
7
A slight difference A molecule is a substance that has two or more atoms bonded together. The can be atoms of the same element Elemental oxygen exists as a molecule, O2 Compounds are two ore more different elements combined in a fixed ratio.
8
Mixtures Mixtures do not have fixed composition
Mixtures do not have set physical properties Mixtures can be separated by a physical process into component parts Filtering Distilling Manually
9
Heterogeneous Mixtures
In a Heterogeneous mixture the parts are different from each other One area is different than another
10
Homogeneous Mixtures Contain more than one type of substance
The substances are evenly distributed - the same throughout
11
Specific types of Mixtures
Solutions Solutes dissolved in a solvent Homogeneous with small particles Colloids Heterogeneous with intermediate particle size Exhibits the Tyndall effect Suspensions Heterogeneous with large particles
