To interact with UPLift! view as a Slide Showhere This section of UPLift! is aimed at all students. It focuses on how you can make effective use of freely available internet services. For example, it will help you to identify a range of alternative Google services such as Google Books and Google Scholar and when its appropriate to use them for your studies. Perhaps you know how to do some of these things already? Take the short quiz to find out. Perhaps you need to develop a particular skill? Take the link to find out more. Examples: Library database, photosharing website, blogs... Web 2.0: Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Discussion groups photosharing websites (flickr.com) Academic resources: Databases (include journal articles and e-books), image resources (copyright cleared for educational purposes), specialist subject information (including company and marketing reports) General web information: News websites, websites from organisations, institutions and companies Trade websites: ebay.co.uk, folksy.com, amazon.com Click here to reveal answers Uses for social purposes, can give a personal dimension to your academic work Good quality resources for your academic work Evaluate before using them, useful for an overview Sites where goods are bought and sold

5 Developing Skills Distinguish confidently between different types of web resources The internet is an unregulated information source, so you need to be able to evaluate general websites thoroughly. Alternatively you can find good quality, subscription based sites on the Deep Web (i.e. parts of the web not searched by searched engines). You will find many of these on the library web pages, for instance, databases, electronic book suppliers, image sites and specialist data such as marketing reports or standards. Which kind of resource would you use? Click on the items below to find out when you might use each. Blog Twitter Discussion Group In Blogs you get a detailed point of view from one person. You get a variety of opinions relating to your topic, which you must evaluate and consider how valuable they are for your research. 9 Using the Internet for Academic Purposes Explain when Google Books might be useful for your research Many of the books on your reading lists are available to preview on Google Books.Google Books If you use the online Reading Lists service on the library homepage, you will automatically be linked to Google Book previews, where available. It helps you to get a flavour of what the book is about, for example, providing you with access to the table of contents. Often, you can read some sections of the text to see if you like the authors style of writing.
