Argument Structure English II
2
The Hook Imagine your parents take away your phone because you overused data. How do you start the argument to get your phone back? A hook grabs your audience’s attention. Use an anecdote, quote, statistic, fact to pull them in.
3
The Claim After the hook, then you state your claim.
The claim states your belief and what you wish to argue. What would your claim to your parents be?
4
Supporting Reasons and Evidence
Your support is the reasoning behind your claim. Supporting evidence includes quotes, statistics, data to make your claim logical. What would your supporting evidence to your parents be?
5
Counterargument A counterargument recognizes the arguments made by the other side. A counterargument makes you sound more logical. A refutation argues against the counterargument, thus proving your reliability. What would the counterargument and refutation be for the phone situation?
6
Concluding Statement The concluding statement draws your argument to a close and makes a final appeal. It does not repeat what you’ve already said, but sums up your argument with a few final points. What would your concluding statement be for the phone situation?
